the chair : Stingray
this iconic Danish design piece is a dynamic rocking chair which organic shape fully responds to today’s requirements expected from a truly contemporary lounger.
Stingray’s designer, Thomas Pedersen created the chair for his final exam project at the Aarhus school of Design in 2002. built using a vacuum moulding process rather than the conventional heat injection process, the smooth floating chassis made of polypropylene is hard wearing yet sophisticated. the comfortable Stingray invites the user to sit back and relax in a variety of ergonomic positions. this bold, contemporary, daring and unorthodox design, draws inspiration from the innovative fiberglass chairs of the 1950’s.
the designer and the stingray chair
combining unusual innovations in material and construction with references to historical designs, Pedersen is unconventional yet rooted in tradition. Pedersen's award-winning designs always have a functional starting point from which his more elaborate organic shapes take form.
Fredericia’s collaboration with Pedersen began at the Copenhagen Furniture Fair in 2002. Pedersen presented Stingray, his graduation project from Aarhus School of Architecture, and we were very enthusiastic about the unorthodox quality of his eye-catching design.
